What is the difference between Sports Massage & Remedial Massage Therapy?
Sports massage and remedial massage therapy are two types of massage that have a few key differences. The primary focus of sports massage is to help athletes prepare for, perform at, and recover from their athletic endeavors. This may include techniques such as stretching, deep tissue massage, and trigger point therapy. Remedial massage therapy, on the other hand, is focused on addressing specific issues and injuries that may be causing pain or discomfort. This may include techniques such as myofascial release, joint mobilization, and neuromuscular therapy. Both types of massage can be incredibly beneficial for those seeking relief from pain or improved athletic performance, but they serve different purposes and use different techniques to achieve their goals.
When is the best time to come for a Sports Massage?
This will vary from athlete to athlete depending on the frequency of training sessions, the intensity and the load of the sessions.
If you’re training high intensity sessions (eg. Triathlon, Powerlifter, Bodybuilder, Strongman etc) we generally recommend anywhere between 2-4 weeks.
If you’re training for general health and wellbeing or just a weekend warrior and wanting more injury prevention we recommend anywhere between 3-6 weeks.
If you’re looking to get a massage prior to a major sporting or fitness event we recommend to come at least 3 days prior to your event. If you haven’t had a massage before an event then give it 1 week so we can see how your body responds to the treatment.
If you’re coming in after an event, we recommend to give yourself around 3-4 days. This is to help you recover from the DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) you may experience.
